Evocations 1996/1999

In 1994 I spent the summer months in Marrakesh.  I lived with a local family who gave me a room as a studio on the top of the house.  I was drawn to something Eastern in their culture.  In the Medina you cannot see houses from the narrow streets.  It is only when you go through a simple door in the high wall that you enter into the rich tapestry and beauty of North African tiles, carpets, pottery, spices and community.
In Japan the red silk kimono is worn beneath the outer kimono and just the flick of red is shown when the woman walks and sometimes an entire painting of a land or seascape is used for the lining of a man's 'Haori' (short coat). The idea is that one should not be ostentatious.
